BUT CLUB - 1950

£10.00Price

Three 'But Club' newspapers covering the 1950 Tour De France. Issues 251, 252 & 253 from August are included. The front covers each feature an image of a prominent rider from the golden age of cycling. Swiss Ferdinand Kubler is pictured on his bike with bouquet and sash after winning the 1950 Tour De France. Louison Bobet's balance is on show, particularly on the Vars and l'Izoard cols which would allow him to win the mountains classifications in 1950. Raphael Geminiani is pictured grimacing en route to his stage seventeen victory from Nice to Gap.

The inner coverage features other stand out riders such as runner up Belgian Stan Ockers, Jean Goldschmidt of Luxembourg, Roger Lambrecht of Belgium and Frenchman Jean Robic. However, most larger articles centre on eventual winner Ferdi Kubler and Frenchmen Louison Bobet & Raphael Geminiani.

The newspapers display beautifully as cycling ephemera. Never intended to last the test of time, the articles provide valuable insights into the cultural context surrounding the 1950 Tour De France while documenting the riders everyday lives. The newspapers could be framed for wall art, to be admired as decoration, used for research or for an everyday coffee table read. Preserving the newspapers allows these histories of cycling to be examined from a variety of perspectives.
