£20.00Price

Six 'Miroir Sprint' Le Miroir Du Tour newspapers covering the 1956 Tour De France and more. Issues 529 A/B/C, 530, 534 and 535 are included. The front covers feature 1956 Men's World Championship Road Race winner Rik Van Steenbergen, eventual 1956 Tour De France winner Roger Walkowiak grinding up the Croix-de-Fer and at the finish line with a bouquet, Jean Forestier collecting a musette bag, Gilbert Bauvin with his musette, gloves and bike ready to try and dethrone Walkowiak and Kai Werner Nielsen of Denmark photographed on the track at the Men's World Pursuit Championship.

The inner coverage features other stand out riders from the 1956 Tour De France such as points classification victor, Belgian Stan Ockers and mountains victor Charly Gaul of Luxembourg. One newspaper also details the World Pursuit Championship victory of Italian Guido Messina, who beat both Jacques Anquetil (2nd) and Kai Werner Nielsen (3rd). Another newspaper focuses on the 1956 Road Race World Championships won by Belgian Rik Van Steenbergen who saw out the previous year's champion Stan Ockers and the infamous Louison Bobet who had been recovering from surgery after missing the Tour De France.

The newspapers display beautifully as cycling ephemera. Never intended to last the test of time, the articles provide valuable insights into the cultural context surrounding cycling events in latter 1956 while documenting the riders everyday lives. The newspapers could be framed for wall art, to be admired as decoration, used for research or for an everyday coffee table read. Preserving the newspapers allows these histories of cycling to be examined from a variety of perspectives.
